Are you considering the benefits of working remotely? Hundreds of companies are exploring remote work opportunities and many of them are doing so successfully. Here's how you can make it work. Our DevriX CEO Mario Peshev spoke at WordCamp Europe 2016 and shared his tips for anyone considering a remote team or those already managing a remote WordPress team. Since much of his experience is with WordPress, the examples he uses come from that industry, although his suggestions can be applied to many different areas. As he puts it, “if heart surgery can be done remotely, no leader of an online business has an excuse not to go the distributed route.” Mario started out as a code geek and IT professional before slowly getting involved in project management and marketing, which led him to start DevriX. DevriX is a distributed WordPress agency with employees on three different continents. We offer software as a service and full-scale WordPress solutions, using retainers for ongoing development. At the moment we already have six WordPress contributors in the team and quite a few active members in the WordPress community. Watch the video below or keep reading for a summary of the conference. Commercial direction and leadership Before considering remote employees, Mario recommends that you take a close look company banner design at where your business is headed. You need a plan for the next 3 months, 6 months, or maybe even 3 years, so you know what to do now. It's your job to start with a very clear plan and strategy, and then find people who have the same values as you and understand your mission. Your leadership should represent you as well as possible. As your team grows, you won't be able to talk to everyone and it will be your team's managers who will have to take over. Also, under no circumstances should you allow toxic people near your employees or customers as they can kill your business. Next, identify the key positions you need to hire for. These will differ depending on your industry. Knowing the positions you need to fill will tell you what essential (hard) skills your employees need to possess. Qualities of a remote employee In addition to technical skills, a remote employee must have certain qualities. In fact, technical skills are not that important because they can be learned. A remote employee must be responsible, a good team player, autonomous and motivated. Remote employees often lack motivation because they don't feel part of the team due to the distance.
